Our mission

AI4Science aims to transform how science is conducted by developing AI methods tailored to scientific discovery. The project integrates explainable machine learning, multimodal foundation models, automated equation discovery, and semantic technologies to create interpretable, reusable, and domain-aware AI tools. These will be applied to real-world challenges in materials science, medicine, immunology, plant biology, and mathematics, enabling AI to actively contribute to the formulation of models, explanations, and new knowledge.

Building on the expertise of Slovenia’s top research institutions — Jožef Stefan Institute (IJS), University of Ljubljana (UL), National Institute of Chemistry (KI), University of Maribor (UM), and National Institute of Biology(NIB) — AI4Science develops next-generation AI methods for science, spanning explainable ML, multimodal foundation models, and automated scientific modeling. Its core objective is to advance AI-driven discovery in materials science, medicine, biology, and mathematics, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and promoting open, FAIR science across Europe.
